Thayer Sew-Along Overview

Jen Beeman

Since the Thayer Jacket originally launched back in 2019, we've published a ton of resources to help you construct a jacket of your own, including the sew-along. With the release of size 32, along with the fact that the sew-along section of our site is currently under construction, I thought it would be a good time to do a little round up. So with that, here's an overview of all the posts in our Thayer Sew-Along!

Day 1: Ready-to-Wear Inspiration

Sometimes it can be hard, when starting a new project, to decide what direction you want to go with it style wise. Because of that we've gathered some images from ready-to-wear to get your creative wheels turning.

Day 2: Choosing Fabrics

The Thayer calls for three fabrics plus interfacing. In this post I walk you through each type along with some swatch suggestions for each fabric. I also touch on what type of interfacing I've found works best with the Thayer jacket.

Day 3: Gathering Supplies

The first step to a successful project is making sure you have everything you'll need from start to finish right at hand. This post not only includes a checklist of supples, we've also got links to our favorite tools and supplies!

Day 4: Choosing Your Size

If you aren't sure what size to make, this post is for you! We run you through the best practices for successfully choosing a size that will fit.

Day 5: Common Pattern Adjustments

In this post we take you through some common pattern adjustments from lengthening and shortening your pattern to full bust adjustments on princess seams.

Day 6: A Guide to Cutting

The Thayer requires three fabrics and interfacing which can be a lot to keep track of. This post lays it all out so you know you're cutting the correct pieces from the correct fabric!

Day 7: Assembling the Jacket Fronts

After all that prep, it's finally time to sew! In this post we'll sew together the fronts of our jackets, including princess seams, yoke, and that ingenious little yoke pocket.

Day 8: Sewing the Pockets

Now we'll sew our pockets. This is a topstitching heavy post so get ready, you may want to check out our Topstitching Tips post! We'll guide you through with ease.

Day 9: Assembling the Jacket Backs

In this post we sew up the back and attach our yoke. An easy day in the Thayer Sew-Along!

Day 10: Shoulder Seams and Sleeves

Today we're sewing up the jacket shell. Lots of long stretches of topstitching so make sure your bobbin is loaded up. After this post you'll finally have something you can try on!

Day 11: Assembling the Lining

If this group of steps gives you déjà vu, it's because they're essentially the same as the steps for assembling the shell – but without the topstitching!

Day 12: Lining the Jacket

If you've ever bagged a jacket this will be familiar, though due to the construction we've switched a few things up. Never fear, though, we've got all the photos you need here!

Day 13: Assembling and Attaching the Collar

In this post we assemble and attach the collar. I love the way this collar & collar stand are drafted, the way they fit together is so fun to sew, plus – home stretch!

Day 14: Inserting Buttons & Buttonholes

This may seem like the most high stakes part of the Thayer, but with our easy tips you'll have your jacket finished in no time!

I hope you found it helpful to have all this info in one place. At the moment we don't have a video version of the Thayer sew-along but eventually I'd love to get one up. If anyone has the secret to pausing time, I'm all ears because I seem to perpetually be out of it! I'll be highlighting a few other Thayer posts over the next two weeks, so stay tuned for those, and don't forget, the pattern is still available for 20% off in all size ranges and formats until the end of March. No code needed, discount ends Monday, March 31st at 11:59 CDT!
