Introduction, Fabric & Supplies

Get set up for success before you start sewing your Field Bag. We'll cover the pattern, fabric weight and why 8–10 oz cotton canvas is the standard choice, strap options, cotton cord, grommets, and the tools and notions you'll need to complete your bag.

Lesson 2

Printing & Assembling the PDF Pattern

New to PDF sewing patterns? This lesson walks you through the full process. Learn how to download and open your pattern in Adobe Acrobat Reader, print at the correct scale using the test square, and trim and tape the pages together by pattern piece for the most accurate results.

Lesson 3

Cutting & Marking Your Fabric

Woman beside a printed Field Bag pattern piece laid over printed canvas fabric on a cutting mat with pattern weights.

Careful cutting and marking is the foundation of a well-constructed bag. This lesson takes it step by step, covering grain and selvedge, why you'll skip pre-washing your canvas, how to lay out and cut each pattern piece, and how to transfer your markings accurately whether you're working with your own fabric or a kit.

Lesson 4

Assembling the Pocket

Your pocket pieces are cut and marked and now it's time to put them together! You'll stitch, turn, and press the outer pocket, set the grommets, and attach everything to the bag body with a large open section and divided tool pockets for all your notions.

Lesson 5

Assembling the Body of the Bag

The bag really starts to take shape in this lesson. You'll fold and stitch the corners, sew the side seams using a French seam technique, press and stitch the drawcord channel, and create the bottom gussets that help the bag stand on its own.

Lesson 6

Finishing Your Field Bag

The finish line is in sight! In this final lesson, you'll turn the bag right side out, position and stitch the wrist strap, sew the drawcord channels closed, and thread the cotton cord through using a safety pin. Tie off the ends and your Field Bag is ready to use.
