Uniform Sew-Along: Neck Facing

Today is the last installment in our Uniform Tunic Sew-Along, sewing your neckline facing! Both necklines are done in the same manner but I’ll be demo-ing on the view B V-neck so since there’s one clip you’ll definitely need to make for this version. Let’s dive in!

To begin, align the shoulder seams of the front and back neck facings with right sides facing and stitch them together. Just a reminder, these pieces should be interfaced.

Press the seam allowances open.

Fold under the ¼” seam allowance along the outer edge of the facing and press. You can do this after you’ve sewn the neck facing to the bodice but I find it easier to do it first before it’s attached since you’re not dragging the entire garment around with you.

Align the neck facing around the bodice neckline with right sides facing. Match the shoulder seams, center front, and center back. Stitch the two together with a ¼” seam allowance.

Grade the neckline by cutting the seam allowance of the facing in half. Then clip around the neckline to, but not through, the stitching line approximately every ½”. If you’re making the V-neck as shown here, make sure you clip into the V or else you won’t be able to get a sharp point at center front.

Press the seam allowance and facing up, away from the bodice. Understitch through the facing and seam allowance. This will anchor the seam allowance in place and force the seam line to roll to the inside of the neckline.

Fold the facing to the inside of the bodice and press along the seam line. Pin in place and stitch the outer edge in place anchoring the facing to the bodice.
