The Willow Pattern Design Details
Earlier this week we introduced the Willow in sizes 14 – 32! Today we’ll be talking about the pattern more in depth – diving deeper into the individual elements of each version and walking you through the style decisions we made.
The pattern description for the Willow describes it as a versatile and reliable staple for all seasons. The tank & dress are fitted at the shoulders and fall into a relaxed fit below the bust. The Willow is unfussy, easy to wear, and is perfect for a picnic or an elegant evening out depending on which fabrics you choose!
When we first designed & released the Willow back in 2016 we wanted a tank with a more modern cut than was available at the time. A higher neckline and slightly cropped, boxier fit were top of mind for us and they still are today! We made sure the shoulder was wide enough to cover bra straps and placed a dart to keep the tank from swinging out at the front.
The Willow is lightly fitted through the shoulders and upper bust and then transitions into an A-line shape below. The body is anchored with a polished deep hem that looks beautiful in a wide variety of fabrics. We’ve finished the armholes and neckline with a bias facing for a professional finish that matches the hem.
After we designed the tank we thought…this would be very cute with a skirt! The deep hem folds to become a horizontal center pleat through the dress version. Rather than make the dress front and backs one piece, we split them below the pleat so that you could easily use two separate coordinating fabrics.
The Willow Dress hits just above the knee but it’s easy to lengthen if you’re looking for a bit more coverage, simply add onto the hem the amount you’d like and finish as instructed.
Our next post will focus on our fabric recommendations so check back here for that! In the meantime let us know if you have any questions in the comments below.
