Yates Sew-Along: Assembling and Attaching the Collar

Attaching the collar is relatively easy so lets dive right in!

Start by aligning the center back seam of the two under collar pieces. You’ll want the wrong side of your fabric facing out.

Sew the two under collar pieces together using your 1/2″ seam allowance.

Press the seam allowance open.

Align the under collar and the upper collar along the outer edges as shown above. Stitch along these edges again using the 1/2″ seam allowance.

Grade the seam allowance of the under collar in half and clip your corners.

Turn the collar right side out and press. Secure the two open layers at the bottom of the collar together by stitching within the seam allowance. I stitched it shut at 1/4″ that way I don’t have to rip out any basting later and it won’t show in your finished garment. You’ll also want to topstitch around the outer edge of the collar at this point. I stitched at 1/4″ for mine.

Now we’ll pin the collar to the neck edge of the coat. Start by matching the edges of the collar with the notch in the point of the neckline. From there work your way towards the center back matching your notches. Then pin between the notches to prep for sewing.

Stitch the collar to the neckline within the seam allowance. I usually aim for between 1/4″ and 3/8″ for this stitching line.
