Farrow Fabric Suggestions and Inspiration

When we originally released the Farrow Dress back in 2016, we shared this post suggesting fabrics that highlight just how versatile this dress is with swatches for casual everyday, dressier occasions, and elegant formal options.

With the new release we wanted to share some updated fabrics and inspiration. Suggested fabrics for the Farrow are: light to medium weight wovens such as linen, linen blends, cotton, lightweight wool and wool blends, silk charmeuse, and silk twill. Depending on the fabric used, the drape and silhouette of the Farrow Dress changes, meaning one pattern can yield many different dress results! Additionally, the center front, center back, and diagonal seaming offer some fun opportunities for color blocking and mixing of prints.

Along with fabric swatches, we'll be sharing some of our favorite Farrows we've spotted in the wild. We hope this post sparks some inspiration and excitement for your next Farrow Dress!

Solids

To start off we're sharing some great solid staples ranging from linen, rayon, cotton, to silk. When using a solid color I like to use ones with some texture to add interest. You may also notice I included two different tencel options - I love a tencel Farrow because It drapes beautifully and feels very luxe. If you don't see a color you like down below, keep in mind that many of these fabrics come in other colors as well!

 1. Sueded Tencel - Viscose Crepe
2. Vintage Finish Linen
3. Sandwashed Cotton
4. Linen Blend Chambray
5. Raw Silk Noil
6. Tencel Twill

Stripes

If you would like to branch out from a solid color but are intimidated by busy prints, a good place to start is with a stripe or plaid! With the seaming on the Farrow you can even play with the directions of the stripes or mix with a solid fabric.

1.  Linen Tencel
2.  Japanese Double Gauze
3. Cotton Linen
4. Cotton Lurex Handwoven Metallic Stripe
5. Cotton Stripe
6. Otto Check EU Linen

Prints

The silhouette of the Farrow pairs amazingly well with prints of all kinds and of all sizes and scales. Though the seaming has potential to get lost in a print, the hidden pockets are an extra exciting surprise! A few of the prints down below are double sided which would be fun to utilize both sides with the piecing of the dress!

1. Rayon Challis
2. Reversible Cotton Jacquard
3. Cotton Linen Jacquard
4. Linen Cotton
5. Polyester Charmeuse
6. Cotton Lawn

Fancies

Did you know that the very first iteration of the Farrow Dress was Jen's wedding dress?! She made her dress in a beautiful 4 ply silk crepe (#6 down below). The Farrow can be easily elevated to fit any formal occasion by choosing finer fabrics like silks, a fancy brocade, or even a comfortable linen woven with metallic thread.

1. Metallic Linen
2. Polyester Brocade
3. Polyester Brocade
4. Polyester Brocade
5. Metallic Linen
6. Silk 4-ply Crepe

That's a wrap! It is so fun for us to see what everyone is making- so be sure to tag your #FarrowDress and us @grainlinestudio and happy sewing!
